Letter from our Leadership Team
June 2020 - It may seem counterintuitive to launch a new restaurant concept during this time of deep uncertainty and unease. There is much to consider: First and foremost, how do we keep our customers and employees safe and healthy? How do we cope with the economic uncertainty owing to social distancing rules? How do we prepare for the possibility of another government mandated restaurant shut down? These are only a few of our considerations in launching Tug Eatery.
In the end, we made the decision to launch our restaurant during this time because we believe that now, more than ever, the community needs to come together as a collective whole. At the same time, we recognise that this decision comes with the very serious responsibility of ensuring that we are doing this in a safe manner.
We have created and implemented effective health and safety protocols, based on the recommendations of the CDC and Worksafe BC. We have taken the time needed to consider all of the factors surrounding the way we interact with our guests, the way we prepare food, and the way we sanitise our space.
We are about community first and foremost. We want every single person who enters Tug to feel welcome and at ease. In the wake of social isolation, and the loneliness that it entails, we have encouraged our staff to really take the time to engage with our guests and get to know them. We want our guests to feel like they will always find a friend at Tug. We embrace local community by partnering with many small businesses on our food and drink items. We also encourage a friendly, collaborative, and non-competitive atmosphere with all of our neighbouring businesses.
We recognise that many people are undergoing financial hardship right now and we are doing what we can to keep our prices as low as possible. We have introduced a more efficient food sourcing and tracking system to allow to us to stay on top of our food costs; we are engaging with local food suppliers to deliver high quality, locally produced food that doesn’t come with hefty transportation costs; and we are using an advanced point of sale system that allows our servers to efficiently place your order right at your table.
We aim to create a memorable experience by providing our guests with a comfortable and creative food and drink program, live acoustic music whenever we can, and a beautiful patio to take in the scenery of the tug boats going by in our busy working harbour.
We don't know what the future holds, but we remain optimistic. Our essence is community, creativity, and experience. We very much look forward to having you join us on our journey as we work to achieve our dream of making Tug Eatery one of Vancouver Island's best restaurants and a safe community gathering place in this time when we need community the most.
